The Confucian canon provides many terms for virtues, often contradictory or overlapping. In general, the stress is on conformity to tradition, acceptance of one's social position and willingness to perform one's assigned role in life: essentially to bloom where one is planted. Since virtue is a constant topic in the Confucian canon there are several lists of virtues to choose from.
Each is put forth as a pair of social statuses with rights and duties that obtain between them.

A separate page is devoted to an outline of the traditional Chinese family link. Various writers have identified other terms as particularly important in understanding Chinese civilization.
